Coral Care

Coral care starts with stability. Species and individual specimens vary, so use the information below as a starting framework and adjust for the actual coral in front of you.

Before placement

• Inspect the coral and allow time for temperature and system acclimation.
• Start conservatively with light when moving coral between different systems.
• Choose flow that keeps tissue moving naturally without blasting the coral.

Keep parameters stable

Avoid large, rapid swings in salinity, temperature, alkalinity and nutrients. Consistency is usually more useful than chasing a single target value.

Watch the coral

Polyp extension, tissue inflation, color, feeding response and recession can all provide useful information. Make measured changes and give the animal time to respond.
